EsterilSol™ Small Grants Program

Overview
EsterilSol is an injectable sterilant for male dogs which results in permanent sterilization with one treatment. The product was launched in Mexico in the spring of 2008 by Ark Sciences. EsterilSol is the Latin American brand of Neutersol, which is FDA-approved, though not currently available in the U.S.

The EsterilSol Small Grants Program (ESGP) will help non-U.S. nonprofit organizations get started using this technology. Grants will help cover training-related expenses and will match the organization’s initial purchase of product. Grants will be approximately US$3,000.
Grant applicants will be selected based on the following guidelines, as well as other factors:
  • Appropriateness and potential impact of EsterilSol for the community.
  • Sustainability of the proposed EsterilSol program and of the organization.
  • Ability to raise funding to purchase initial doses (in order to receive matching funds to double that purchase).
  • Ability to send a veterinarian to Mexico for in-person training on injection technique. (Training will also be held at the ACC&D Symposium in Texas, USA in April 2009.)
  • Ability to collect and organize data, and commitment to provide a report to ACC&D including data on injection site reactions, report on public response to non-surgical alternative, key outcomes and learning, and program photos.
  • Ability to coordinate with local and/or national regulatory agencies to get approval to import EsterilSol if EsterilSol is not yet registered in the applicant's country (please contact Brian Corbett at Ark Sciences for assistance: bcorbett@arksciences.com).
  • See “Applying for a Grant” below for more details.

Grants will be awarded on a funds-available basis. ACC&D is working to identify sponsors for individual grants. If your application is approved at a time at which funds are not currently available, we will notify you and keep in contact while we seek funding for your grant.

If you believe that this program may be a good fit for your organization, we encourage you to submit an application. Contact Karen at karen@acc-d.org if you have questions or concerns.

Sponsoring a Grant
As soon as EsterilSol became available, ACC&D began hearing from nonprofit organizations from developing countries around the world eager to bring the product into their communities. Ark Sciences is able to send product to NGO’s in non-U.S. countries, and to provide injection training in Mexico. However, the costs to travel for training and to purchase initial doses and ancillary supplies is prohibitive for many of these groups, which are working in harsh conditions with extremely limited resources. These groups need help getting set up with this new technology so that it can be put to use.

At the same time, ACC&D and our international animal welfare and veterinary colleagues are eager to increase learning about this product. We need to better understand what community characteristics lead to success with EsterilSol, how climate-related conditions affect the rate of injection-site reactions, what marketing strategies are most effective for making dog owners aware of this alternative, and other factors.

The EsterilSol Small Grants Program was conceived to respond to both of these needs: facilitating early adoption of non-surgical sterilant use—including helping ensure that early adopters develop sustainable programs using established best practices—and gathering and sharing data on EsterilSol use in a variety of settings.

These grants will be awarded on a funds-available basis. We are seeking partners to fund projects from a variety of countries with differing cultures, project designs, and objectives, with the aim of developing and sharing a diverse portfolio of case studies.

This grant program provides a unique opportunity to introduce a non-surgical sterilant to a qualified organization in a needy community for a remarkably small investment. EsterilSol injections are available for less than US$4 per dose, and full grants can be sponsored for just US$3,000. These grants will result in significant numbers of dogs sterilized and important advanced learning about this product—the first injectable sterilant to be available at this scale.
