Past Projects

Megestrol Acetate (MA) “kitty birth control” clinic

In early 2022, ACC&D partnered with Cat Adoption Team (C.A.T.) to host a pilot “kitty birth control” clinic to see if the short-term contraceptive, megestrol acetate (MA), could be used to prevent owned female cats from becoming pregnant while they wait for a spay appointment.

Studying GonaCon in female cats

Based on the promise of several studies demonstrating a contraceptive effect in female cats of a vaccine called GonaCon, ACC&D sponsored a study to evaluate its potential. We learned a lot about this vaccine and about creating a hybrid research model to humanely study a contraceptive in a cat colony. We have published two papers on the results. Regrettably, we concluded that the efficacy and duration of this contraceptive was not high enough for us to move to a next stage.

Zeuterin field studieS

ACC&D is committed to advancing non-surgical fertility control options that are safe, humane, and economical. We also recognize the importance of understanding and sharing information on how non-surgical sterilants can most effectively be used within a community, veterinary practice, or animal shelter. Between 2009 & 2012, we supported field studies to contribute data on best practices and behavioral considerations related to use of Zeuterin (distributed as EsterilSol during these studies) for male dogs.

Veterinary survey

In late 2007 and in 2008, ACC&D commissioned two independent studies on the perception and use of nonsurgical sterilants (contraceptives) as a viable alternative (or supplement) to the use of surgical spaying and neutering in controlling dog and cat populations. The studies were fielded by BN Research, a leader in animal health marketing research, with over twenty years of experience interviewing veterinarians and pet owners.
