Dr. Julie Levy focuses on the health and welfare of animals in shelters, feline infectious diseases, and humane alternatives for cat population control using both surgical and nonsurgical approaches.
She founded Operation Catnip, a community cat trap-neuter-return program that has spayed, neutered, and vaccinated more than 100,000 cats in Gainesville since 1998. She cofounded the Shelter Medicine Program at the College of Veterinary Medicine with Dr. Cynda Crawford. This educational and discovery initiative has a global impact on the care of homeless animals and is the academic home of the Fear Free Shelters program.
Dr. Levy has published more than 200 journal articles and textbook chapters.
She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the ACVIM Distinguished Research Award, Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award, Outstanding Woman Veterinarian of the Year, the European Society of Feline Medicine Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Feline Medicine, North Carolina State University Distinguished Alumni Award, Avanzino Leadership Award, Association of Shelter Veterinarians Meritorious Service Award, American Association of Veterinary Clinicians Faculty Achievement in Teaching Award.
